With the use of a caliper I was able to determine the exact measurement of each cube with precision. Acceptable range deals with normal distribution of data and is the amount of data within a standard deviation divided by the whole set.
These isometric sketches were used to brainstorm different parts.
Develop the solution
construct and test prototype
By using a combination of mate and flush I was able to fully assemble the cube. Mate connects two pieces while flush puts them on the same plane. The first time two objects are mated two degrees of freedom are taken away. The second time two objects are mated all degrees of freedom are taken away except two. Then when two objects are mated three times all degrees of freedom are taken away.
Evaluate the solution
There appears to be no correlation between age and the time taken to solve the cube. If I were to change anything in my design it would make more pieces interlock so that it would stay together.
Present the solution
The design process started when I recorded the individual measurements of all the cubes. This along with the design brief was apart of defining the problem. I then took the collected data and created a histogram out of it. The histogram graphed the data to show if the it was normally distributed. The data isn't normally distributed as the histogram doesn't form a perfect bell curve. I then brainstormed twenty different pieces that could be used to form the cube. This was generating concepts phase of the design process. Develop the solution phase consisted of creation of the flip book and technical drawings of the five pieces. Next I began on the construction of the five pieces and cube in total. This step consisted of not just the basic construction but also painting each of the five pieces. This phase was construct and test the prototype. After that I started working on the computer with inventor and constructed and assembled the pieces. I also made the tech dimensions, and assembly. This process spans the entire design process and is not confined to one step. Evaluate the solution is demonstrated when I had to replace cubes that did not fit in my data. This website is the final step in the design process and shows the presentation.
